"Millennials: Don't Know, Don't Care Generation"

Ask the typical millennial (ages 18-36) what they believe about God and you're liable to get the response "don't know, don't care."

According to a new study, close to half of all millennials (43%) are "Don'ts" (as in 'don't know, don't care') or have an attitude of apathy (Apatheism) when it comes to God.

Researchers found that "younger Americans are significantly more likely than the two previous generations to embrace horoscopes as a guide and Karma as a life principal..."reports the The Christian Post.

Not surprising when you consider these findings from Barna Research Group:

  • nearly three-quarters of American youth have experimented with witchcraft-related activities
  • 30% claim they've had supernatural encounters with demons or other entities
  • 10% say they have communicated with the dead
  • and 10% claim they have psychic powers
Out of the 73% engaged in some form of occult activity, the most commonly named were using a Ouija board and/or reading books about witchcraft.

The researchers found that relationally-isolated young people and those without a family background of biblical training were far more likely to experiment with the occult and feel apathetic towards God.

Frightening, because as Billy Graham once pointed out:
"The Bible repeatedly warns us against doing anything that might open the door to demonic influence over us. One of the ways they gain entrance into our lives is through occult practices--even those that seem amusing or harmless."

Let's face it gang--there's nothing harmless about the occult.

A wise man once said: "When it comes to spiritual matters, people are peculiar. They devote themselves to finding "truth", but never encounter the Holy One who encompasses all truth. They engage in all sorts of rituals and practices to find "enlightenment", but dismiss the staggering promise of the gospel: Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, offers Himself as the perfect payment for our sins so that we can have the forgiveness we so desperately need. More than that, we can experience eternal life, which Jesus Himself described as an intimate, never-ending relationship with God in His kingdom. Given that mind-boggling opportunity, why would we look anywhere else or settle for anything less?" -- H. Wayne House, Th.D.

"That is what the Scriptures mean when they say, 'No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love Him" (1 CORINTHIANS 2:9).

"Jesus said,"'I AM the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me" (JOHN 14:6).

"Witchcraft Repackaged"

The U.S. witch population is rising astronomically--to the tune of 1.5 million, according to Quartzy, Basic Witches. And its popularity isn't just growing--it levitating.

Apparently, anyone can be a witch. They pride themselves on being inclusive, although witchcraft tends to appeal to a certain type of demographic--you guessed it--young, liberal women.

According to Quartzy:
"The typical witch nowadays (and it's mostly she, though more men are starting to join in) examines her dreams for clues about her unconscious and fills her life with rituals. She probably attends new-moon gatherings or has an altar in her home. She might cast spells using crystals or herbs for manifestations of wealth and love. And she likely believes in polygamy, too."
Author Julie Roys, formerly of Moody Radio, believes, "It makes sense that witchcraft and the occult would rise as society becomes increasingly postmodern. The rejection of Christianity has left a void that people, as inherently spiritual beings, will seek to fill. Plus, Wicca has effectively repackaged witchcraft for millennial consumption. No longer is witchcraft and paganism satanic and demonic," she said.

GotQuestions.org begs to differ.
"The Bible has a lot to say about witchcraft. Witchcraft and its many cousins, such as fortune-telling and necromancy, are Satan's counterfeits to holy spirituality. The Bible expressly condemns all forms of witchcraft.
"Since the Garden of Eden, Satan's major focus has been to divert the human heart away from worship of the One true God. He entices humans with the suggestion of power, self-realization, and spiritual enlightenment. To become involved in witchcraft in any way is to enter Satan's realm. Modern entanglements with witchcraft include:

  • horoscopes
  • Ouija boards
  • Eastern meditation rituals
  • casting spells
  • using crystals or herbs
  • worshiping creation rather than the Creator
"Witchcraft and its many counterparts promise spirituality but lead only to emptiness  and death. Only Jesus has the words of life (John 6:68)."
A wise man once said: "Why seek any power apart from the source of all real power? Why seek spirits who are not the Holy Spirit?" -- GotQuestions.org
"Now the Holy Spirit tells us clearly that in the last times some will turn away from the true faith; they will follow deceptive spirits and teachings that came from demons" - 1Timothy 4:1.
"The god of this age (Satan) has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God" - 2Corinthians 4:4.

"A Supernatural Minefield"

Nearly three-quarters of American teenagers have experimented with at least one type of psychic or witchcraft-related activity according to a study done by Barna Research Group.

Surprised? You wouldn't be if you've ever checked out the Teen section in a bookstore or your local library. Talk about a supernatural minefield! That section is crawling with vampires, ghosts, goblins, magic, witchcraft and all things occult and creepy.

According to Barna Research:

  • 30% of teens claim they've had supernatural encounters
  • 10% say they have communicated with the dead
  • 10% claim they have psychic powers
  • while 30% claim to have seen an angel, demon, or some other supernatural being
Out of the 73% engaged in some form of occult activity, the most commonly named were using a Ouija board and/or reading books about witchcraft.

The researchers found that relationally-isolated teenagers and those experiencing a significant amount of stress and frustration were more likely to experiment with occult activities, while the least likely by far to do so were those with evangelical faith.

So how do parents steer their teens clear of this supernatural minefield?

David Kinnaman, author of the report, believes there are no simple solutions. "Unfortunately, we discovered the answers are quite complex. Teens need help becoming wiser consumers of media, but that takes a long-term, intensive process of coaching. They would also benefit from more integration of Scriptural perspectives into their decision-making--that is, they need to operate on the basis of a biblical worldview.

"But that takes years to develop, immense effort, and close cooperation between church and home," he continued. "Youth ministries need to address the supernatural more frequently as well as customize their ministry to each student."

In the meantime? If your teen is obsessed with supernatural themes, dare to find out why and explain why the Bible warns against the occult and witchcraft.

A wise man once said: "The Bible repeatedly warns us against doing anything that might open the door to demonic influence over us. One of the ways they gain entrance into our lives is through occult practices--even those that seem amusing or harmless."  Billy Graham
