"Escalating Signs of the Times"

In recent weeks, the world has been shaken—literally. Devastating back-to-back earthquakes struck Venezuela on June 24, 2026, with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, claiming over 1,900 lives, and leavingtens of thousands still missing. La Guaira and parts of Caracus arein ruins.
Worldwide, about 16 major quakes with a magnitude range of7.0-7.9 occur annually with at least one 8.0 (thrown in for goodmeasure).
So are we having more major quakes or are we just getting better atrecording them? Apparently, both. In the past 40-50 years, records show that we have exceeded the long-term average number of majorquakes about a dozen times, sometimes significantly.
Meanwhile, deadly heatwaves have scorched Europe and other regions, breaking June temperature records, triggering medical emergencies, and contributing to over 1,300 deaths from extreme heat in just one week. Typically, more than 175,000 people dieacross Europe from heat-related causes each year.
Compounding these natural disasters are the persistent wars and conflicts raging across the globe. From the ongoing war in Ukraine to fighting in the Middle East, along with civil wars in Sudan, Myanmar, Somalia, Cameroon, and the Central African Republic. In other words “nation rising against nation” continues unabated, displacing millions, adding to global instability, causing severe food crises and famines.
These events feel increasingly frequent and intense. Many believers are turning to Scripture, asking: Are these the signs Jesus warned us about?
Jesus described the conditions leading up to the end of the age andHis return in the Olivet Discourse:
“Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains.” (Matthew 24:7-8, NIV)
Luke’s account adds: “There will be great earthquakes, and in various places, famines and pestilences. And there will be terrors and great signs from heaven.” (Luke 21:11).So are these "birth pains" or normal cycles? Skeptics note that earthquakes, extreme weather, and conflicts have always occurred. Modern media and population growth in vulnerable areas amplify reports of disasters. Scientific data shows variability in seismic activity, though some regions report clusters. Heatwaves are linked to broader climate patterns, and let's face it, geopolitical tensions are nothing new.
So what makes our times different?
The Jews back in the land.
The End-Time clock began ticking with the return of God's chosenpeople to their ancestral homeland, the land God promised them: Israel. Only then, starting in 1948 after two millennia of exile and dispersion, do the signs become meaningful.
From a biblical perspective, Jesus didn’t say disasters and wars would be entirely new, but that they would intensify like birth painsincreasing in frequency and severity as the time draws near. Wars, moral decay, deception, and the gospel reaching all nations are listed alongside these physical signs (Matthew 24).
These events serve as a wake-up call to get ready. They point us toward the living God who sovereignly rules over nature andhistory. Jesus warned us over and over again to watch for thesesigns.
“When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near” (Luke 21:28).
A wise man once said: "Signs of the times are not meant to causepanic or date-setting, but rather to inspire hope, urgency inevangelism, and godly living." -- Greg Laurie, Pastor
