"Teenage Euthanasia?"

Though it was widely reported that a 17-year old Dutch girl was legally euthanized in a Netherlands "end-of-life" clinic, it turns out it isn't true. The girl, Noa Pothoven starved herself to death after her request for euthanasia was denied. She died at home after saying goodbye to family and friends.

Officially 'euthanasia'? No--this took a lot longer.

"Children as young as 12 can opt for euthanasia in the Netherlands, but only after a doctor determines that the patient's pain is unbearable," reports news.com.au

Noa Pothoven's pain? Depression.

In a social media post before her death, she wrote,

"I will get straight to the point: within a maximum of 10 days I will die. After years of battling and fighting, I am drained. I have quit eating and drinking for a while now, and after many discussions and evaluations, it was decided to let me go because my suffering is unbearable."

Noa said the trauma of being raped as a young girl of 14 made her feel she couldn't keep living. She tried for 3 years.

While her death wasn't official euthanasia, her parents and doctors agreed not to force feed her.

The Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg are the only places it is legal to euthanize children, but assisted suicide is legal in Canada, along with the U.S. states of: Oregon, Washington, California, Colorado, Vermont, Hawaii, Washington D.C. and on August 1st, New Jersey.

According to Charles Foster, Research Associate at Oxford University,

"Assuming euthanasia's the only way to end suffering is untrue. Given modern palliative care, there is simply no need for euthanasia. Depression and other psychiatric problems can be treated and are too subjective, especially in children, to euthanise. If the law allows professional care-givers to become professional executioners, the medical profession will also be dangerously and irrevocably changed."

Even Dutch psychiatrist Boudewijn Chabot, whose lawsuit made assisted suicide legal in the Netherlands for those suffering with depression, now has second thoughts.

"The Euthanasia Law does not provide protection to people with dementia and psychiatric problems," he said. "Silently, the foundation of the law is being eroded." Chabot also said he fears the skyrocketing number of "incapacitated" people being "surreptitiously" killed are without proof of consent. In fact, one video showed an Alzheimer's' patient struggling while her family held her down so the doctor could inject her.

"I don't see how we can get the genie back in the bottle. It would already mean a lot if we'd acknowledge he's out,"Chabot said.

"Assisted Suicide For Kids Leaves Parents In The Dark"

While Americans go coo coo for cocoa puffs over who will win the midterm elections, Canadian pediatricians are grappling with much darker questions.

Doctors from Toronto's Hospital For Sick Children, in a paper published in The British Journal of Medical Ethics, have spelled out policies and procedures for administering medically-assisted death to children, "including scenarios where the parents would not be informed until after the child dies."

"Usually, the family is intimately involved in the (end-of-life) decision-making process. If, however, a capable patient explicitly indicates that they do not want their family members involved in their decision-making, although health care providers may encourage the patient to reconsider and involve their family, ultimately the wishes of capable patients (under the age of 18) with respect to confidentiality must be respected," wrote pediatric doctors, administrators, and ethicists from the Toronto Hospital in the September issue of the prestigious journal.

Currently forbidden by law, the Canadian Council of Academies is slated to report to Parliament regarding "expert" medical opinion about extending voluntary euthanasia to minors without parental consent.

Their argument? "There is no meaningful ethical distinction between a patient choosing to refuse burdensome treatment and accepting an inevitable death versus patients choosing to die by chemical injection before the disease brings on death."

In the Province of Ontario, "capable" minors may refuse treatment without parental consent. Therefore, "there is no legal reason to require parental involvement in an assisted death."

Seriously? There's a huge difference between allowing nature to take its course without medical intervention and a lethal injection. And then to leave parents in the dark until after their child is dead? Pure evil.

Apparently, while it "takes a village" to raise a child, it only takes one doctor, playing God, to kill a child.

Belgium has been sliding down the slippery slope since the law legalizing euthanasia was passed there. We really have no idea how 'terminal' these children were--and I doubt any limitation to 'terminal' will last as a qualifying criterion. But Belgium wants to crank it up a notch--and extend the law to children.

"The principle of euthanasia for children sounds shocking at first, but it's motivated by compassion and protection," said John Harris, a professor of bioethics at the University of Manchester. "It's unfair to provide euthanasia differentially to some citizens and not to others (children) if the need is equal."

Advocates argue that euthanasia for children, with the consent of their parents, is necessary to give families an option in a desperately painful situation.

Belgium legalized the practice for adults (or emancipated minors beginning at age 15) in 2002. The ruling Socialist party has (after 2 years of debate) proposed a bill that would expand the right to children of any age, as long as their parents agree.

The Christian perspective believes in the sanctity of life from the moment of conception until natural death. That disqualifies:

• abortion
• assisted-suicide
• euthanasia

The argument that "everyone has a right to do what they want with their own body" doesn't hold water.

When human life is trivialized, there are dire consequences for everybody. It inevitably escalates.

For instance:

Arguments for abortion in the case of "rape, incest, or the mother's health" morphed into"a woman's right to choose", followed by late-term abortion, partial-birth abortion, and finally, infanticide moments after birth.

It takes little imagination to see assisted-suicide and euthanasia taking the same slippery slope to include the:

• elderly
• disabled
• mentally challenged

"Modern medicine," says the National Hospice Organization, "offers sophisticated methods of pain control that enable patients to carry on an alert, pain-free life." They reject the practice of voluntary euthanasia.

As Christians we believe God has a reason for everything under the sun. Even suffering. (Ever hear of a death-bed conversion?)

To take life out of the hands of God and change laws so that doctors, relatives and others can directly and intentionally end another person's life is wrong.

To allow a child to decide? Insanity.
